MAY – Meeting Agenda

  • Advice on caring for nucs and packages – checking and feeding
  • Waxed frames versus unwaxed frames
  • Conducting a basic inspection
  • Adding supers
  • Mite management – extended release pads
  • Other pest management – skunks:  hive at least 18 inches off ground for skunks or fencing; bears – electric fence
  • Mentoring – identify who needs a mentor and who can/will be a mentor
  • Question & Answer period

TASKS FOR THE MONTH OF MAY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Feeding
    • as nectar flow gets into full swing (end of May) remove feeders and pollen patties
  • Hive Inspections
    • Watching the entrance
    • Noting what is on the bottom board and in front of the hive
    • Note how many frames the bees are actively storing things in (food and brood)
    • Verify presence of eggs, open larvae, and capped brood
  • Established colonies – swarm control – make splits, forced brood break, Demaree method
  • New colonies – check for queen; make sure package installs with no drawn comb have 1:1 sugar syrup
  • Add boxes (supers) when bees cover 3/4 of the existing frames in the bottom box (or all the boxes below)
  • Pest management – Varrao mites
  • Buy and order new hive components – especially have an additional box and frames ready to add
